If you need a new MacBook Pro this autumn, you’re choosing between two very different bets. On one side is a redesigned MacBook Pro with an OLED display, a touchscreen and a Dynamic Island in place of the notch, which Bloomberg and others have reported for years and which may or may not appear in October. On the other is the M5 Pro MacBook Pro you can buy today, often with a large discount.

This briefing separates what is confirmed from what is rumored, and gives a straight answer for different kinds of buyers. Nothing in it is an Apple announcement; treat every date as a guess until Apple sends invitations.

What is actually rumored

  • OLED display. Deeper blacks, higher contrast and potentially better battery life than the current mini-LED panel.
  • Touch. According to Bloomberg, touch would work alongside the keyboard and trackpad, not replace them. macOS would adapt controls when you tap them, rather than turning into iPadOS.
  • Dynamic Island. A smaller hole-punch camera cutout replacing the notch, with a Dynamic Island around it for alerts, media controls and live activities.
  • A thinner design and a stronger hinge, so the screen doesn’t wobble when you touch it.

The two open questions: when, and which chip

Timing. Reports point to somewhere between October 2026 and early 2027. An October event hasn’t been announced, and several reports consider early 2027 more likely for the redesigned model.

Chips. Earlier reports tied the redesign to M6 Pro and M6 Max. More recent reporting says the first redesigned models may use M5 Pro and M5 Max instead, with a separate 14-inch MacBook Pro getting the new base M6 chip and the current mini-LED display. If that is right, the redesign would change the screen and the case, not the performance class.

What you can buy now

The M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro came out earlier in 2026. Apple raised prices across much of its lineup in late June, and retailers have been discounting heavily since. At the end of September, the 14-inch M5 Pro with 24 GB of memory and 2 TB of storage was on sale at Amazon in the US for around $2,699, about $500 below its list price and below what it cost before the price rise.

Deals change daily and vary by country, so check current prices before deciding. The point is that a discounted M5 Pro is a known, mature machine at a price that may not last once new models arrive.

Who should wait

  • You specifically want OLED or touch, and your current Mac works fine for another six months.
  • You work with HDR video or photos and want the best display Apple makes.
  • You plan to keep the laptop for five years or more and want the new design from day one.

Waiting has costs. The redesign may slip into 2027, first-generation hardware and a first touch-enabled macOS can have rough edges, and a new design is unlikely to be cheaper than today’s discounted machines.

Who should buy the discounted M5 Pro

  • Your current Mac is failing, too slow, or an Intel model that can’t run Golden Gate. See what that means for Intel Macs.
  • You don’t care about touch on a laptop.
  • You want a proven design, and a large discount matters more to you than a new screen.

On performance, reports that the first redesign could use the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips make buying now less risky than in a normal year.

A sensible middle path

If you need to decide before an event is announced, buy from a retailer whose return window would cover a late-October announcement, keep the box, and decide once Apple has spoken. Apple’s own return policy is typically 14 days in most countries, which won’t cover an uncertain launch date. Some retailers offer longer windows, especially around the holidays. Check the exact terms before you buy.

And whatever you buy, a notched MacBook doesn’t have to waste the space. Our guide to making the notch useful covers the apps that turn it into a live bar today.

The short version

An OLED, touch-enabled MacBook Pro with a Dynamic Island is widely reported but not announced, and it may not arrive until early 2027. If you want those features and can wait, wait. If you need a Mac now, a discounted M5 Pro MacBook Pro is a strong buy, especially since the first redesigned models may use the same chips. Buying from a retailer with a generous return window keeps both options open.
