Set a Hot Corner to Show Desktop, then try to drag an image from Safari or Chrome straight to the desktop by pushing your cursor into that corner mid-drag. On macOS 27 Golden Gate, the first attempt often does nothing: the desktop doesn't appear, the drag just stalls at the edge of the screen. Let go, try again, and the second attempt usually works. This has been reported specifically as a Golden Gate regression, filed through Feedback Assistant by at least one tester during the 27.2 beta cycle.
What exactly happens
The reported behavior is precise: when dragging an image or file from a web browser toward a Hot Corner configured to Show Desktop, moving the pointer into that corner does not reliably reveal the desktop on the first attempt while the drag is still in progress. The desktop either doesn't appear at all, or appears and then snaps back before you can drop the file. A second attempt at the same corner, still mid-drag, typically succeeds.
This is distinct from the broader Mission Control and Spaces-switching bugs covered in our Mission Control fix guide. Those affect switching between desktops and full-screen apps broadly. This bug is specific to the combination of an active drag operation and the Show Desktop Hot Corner action.
Confirm you are hitting this, not a settings issue
- Move your cursor into the same Hot Corner without dragging anything. If Show Desktop works normally that way, your Hot Corner is configured correctly, and the problem is specific to the drag interaction.
- Try the same drag-to-corner action with a file from Finder instead of a browser. If it behaves the same way from both sources, that further confirms this is the general bug rather than something specific to one browser.
Workarounds that actually help
- Just try it twice. Unsatisfying, but reliable: push into the corner, and if the desktop doesn't appear, push again without releasing the drag. The second attempt works consistently for most people hitting this.
- Use Command-F3 (or your configured Show Desktop shortcut) instead of a Hot Corner for this specific scenario. The keyboard shortcut for showing the desktop isn't affected by this bug, so dragging a file and then pressing the shortcut to reveal the desktop is a reliable alternative to the corner.
- Use Mission Control directly. Mid-drag, pressing Control-Up Arrow (or your Mission Control shortcut) to open Mission Control, then dropping the file onto the desktop thumbnail in the Spaces bar, sidesteps the Hot Corner path entirely.
- Drop onto a Finder window instead, if one happens to be open to the location you want, rather than needing the bare desktop at all.
Why this happens
Hot Corners and Mission Control's broader interaction model were both affected by changes Golden Gate made to window and Space management this release. The drag-specific failure likely stems from the same category of timing issue behind the other Mission Control glitches covered in our known bugs tracker: an active drag operation appears to interrupt or delay the event that would normally trigger the Hot Corner's action, so the first attempt is effectively swallowed rather than acted on.
Is this fixed yet
This was reported and filed through Feedback Assistant during the macOS 27.2 beta cycle. As of the most recent public information, Apple has not confirmed a fix for this specific interaction in a release or beta build. Until it is specifically acknowledged as resolved, the keyboard shortcut or Mission Control workarounds above are more reliable than depending on the Hot Corner working on the first try during a drag.
A few more questions
Does this happen with all four Hot Corners, or just one? Reports describe it happening with whichever corner is configured for Show Desktop specifically, regardless of which physical corner that is. It is the action, not the screen position, that triggers it.
Does it also affect Hot Corners set to other actions, like Mission Control or Notification Center? The reports specifically describe Show Desktop during an active drag. Hot Corners used for other actions, when not combined with a drag in progress, have not been reported with the same symptom.
Will turning off Hot Corners and using only the keyboard shortcut avoid this permanently? Yes. If you rarely use Hot Corners for anything else, disabling the Show Desktop one and relying on the keyboard shortcut sidesteps this specific bug entirely, at the cost of losing the corner for that action.
The short version
- Dragging a file toward a Show Desktop Hot Corner often fails on the first attempt on macOS 27, then works on the second.
- This is a known, filed issue specific to drag operations, separate from the broader Mission Control bugs on Golden Gate.
- The Show Desktop keyboard shortcut, or dropping onto a desktop thumbnail inside Mission Control, both avoid the bug entirely.
- No confirmed fix has shipped as of the current release or beta.
